How to pronounce“sabermetrics”in English

Sabermetrics has a funny origin.

Sabermetrics is not the statistical analysis of baseball data.

And so sabermetrics-- it's only been a word since 1981.

This is not what sabermetrics is.

We created a sabermetrics track.

I love sabermetrics.

All sorts of statistic are created in Sabermetrics If you're a professional athlete, it also becomes your personal evaluation Which would also lead to your salary, that is the story in Moneyball

But overseas they also put Sabermetrics here But the data that we extract is simply data of the past

But then it's transitioned into sabermetrics and analytics.

And I designed the first course in sabermetrics, just doing baseball analytics at Tufts in 2004.

That's much more what sabermetrics is.

This is the simplified version of sabermetrics-- the scientific and objective analysis of baseball-- much more broadly defined than just looking at the statistical analysis

That's way too narrow a definition for what sabermetrics is.

Well, sabermetrics to me-- and I think most people who really are practitioners would agree with this-- it's the study of the game of baseball

Now, this is a fundamental concept in sabermetrics.

The movie Moneyball is a good example of this This is the movie starring Brad Pitt They would extract the data called Sabermetrics

This is a result from the expected value, this is Sabermetrics This has not entered rugby yet Sabermetrics is already in soccer, basketball, and baseball

He's taught a very successful MOOC, online course, Sabermetrics 101: an Introduction to Baseball Analytics, to about 40,000 students on EdX.

Now, what we've done at BU and at edx.org is develop our course called Sabermetrics 101: An Introduction to Baseball Analytics.

So that's one nice role I have, but it's transitioned to the academic piece here of teaching sabermetrics.

And one of the things we did right away, in both formats, either seminar or MOOC, was talk about the definition of the term sabermetrics.

Now, in terms of baseball, really, baseball-- when we talk about sabermetrics, we're modeling the game.
