tieumir length equilibrium is maintained is greater today than when we started back uh in the 1980s.

tieumirs is made up of and it's a very very simple repeated DNA sequence uh that is sort of a monotonous uh many many many repeats um and she had

uh tieumirs.

discovered the uh tieumir DNA sequence in this organism called tetraheimina it's a single-sellled organism very much like the parramium that high school

are a lot of tieumirs.

be um an enzyme that lengthens uh tieumirs.

provide the raw material to make tieumirs longer.

changes might lie that have to do with tieumir length.

then they stop dividing and it turns out that the short tieumirs play a role in that.

idea was that the uh the chromosomes or the tieumirs which are the chromosome ends would get shorter and shorter and shorter every time a cell divides.

We were very interested in uh as I said tieumirs and chromosomes and and how they um how they functioned and so we really went to the source where there

the implication is that um uh all individuals when the tieumirs get short um will have a certain risk associated um of these uh age related degenerative

kinds of diseases that uh that t short tieumirs may play a role in uh and down the road whether or not there would be some way uh uh to have a therapeutic

uh intervene uh and change the process so that the tieumirs don't shorten progressively or don't shorten as rapidly uh then perhaps there would be

where they were uh interested in uh trying to understand uh the function of tieumirs uh and they had a collaboration which was a cross-country uh

just uh to me but really to everybody working in the field um of tieumirs uh because of course the prize is given to a person for a particular discovery.

Of course it could have been possible that there was another mechanism that that lengthened tieumirs and it's not clear um how long one would then uh keep

them in in mice uh which we uh create that have short tieumirs.

I think that the uh we're just really trying to understand the role of tieumirs in uh in in these diseases um and uh the spectrum of the different

on the actual proteins that bind along the length of the tieamir and how those proteins then um tell tomeorase to elongate the tieumir.

If they have short tieumirs uh then there are uh problems with tissue renewal.

in uh Liz Blackburn's lab when we first uh had discovered uh something that looked like it was elongating tieumirs and then uh a period of about nine

So I really think that I'm sort of sharing this with the uh tieumir field

And in uh doing a uh a collaboration to try and understand the functional components that make up the tieumirs um they proposed that there may

And then uh the question came up about um cells and uh if the tieumirs are shortening every

And so I chose one because I was working with Liz which was to look for an enzyme which might lengthen tieumirs.
