Como contar sílabas em inglês: 4 regras de ouro

1A regra do movimento do queixo

Coloque a mão sob o queixo e diga a palavra devagar. Cada vez que sua mandíbula abaixar para produzir uma vogal, conta como uma sílaba.

2Regra dos ditongos

Quando duas vogais aparecem juntas produzindo um único som combinado (como ea em meat ou ou em cloud), contam como uma única sílaba.

3Regra do "E" mudo

Se uma palavra termina em "e" mudo (como time, home, cake), o "e" final não conta como sílaba; apenas alonga a vogal anterior.

4Regra consoante + "-le"

Quando uma palavra termina em consoante seguida de "-le" (como table, bottle), o "-le" forma seu próprio núcleo silábico.

Perguntas frequentes sobre sílabas e haikus

How does the Syllable Counter calculate syllables in English?
The counter uses a phonotactic onset-coda clustering engine combined with curated dictionary mappings. It identifies vowel nuclei, handles silent letters like final silent "e", processes consonant-le endings, and resolves syncope in words like "chocolate".
What is a Haiku and how does the Haiku Checker verify it?
A traditional English haiku is a three-line poem with a 5-7-5 syllable structure (total of 17 syllables). The tool highlights each line’s syllable count and displays a celebration badge upon reaching 5-7-5.
Why do some words have different syllable counts in conversation vs dictionaries?
Many words undergo vowel reduction (syncope) in natural conversational speech. For example, "chocolate" has 3 syllables on paper but is pronounced with 2 syllables in everyday English.
What is word stress and why does it matter?
Word stress means emphasizing a specific syllable with higher pitch and volume. In English, incorrect stress changes meanings (e.g. REC-ord vs re-CORD).
How is the Reading Ease score computed?
Reading Ease uses the Flesch formula evaluating sentence length and syllable density. Scores from 80-100 indicate easy reading, while scores below 50 indicate complex text.
