The question of what constitutes “getting sivilized” is at the very center of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” And so it begins right there, some time in the 1830s, a few decades before the Civil War.

But at the end of that first book he agrees to go and live with the Widow Douglas and become “sivilized” so that he can join Tom Sawyer’s gang.
