In addition to that, it's really, really important- To be clear that when we are talking about the Waymo Driver, we are only talking about technology that means you LiDAR to four, how we should expect to see Waymo's tech suite evolve over time, and what it means for maybe the future where we could use this on a passenger vehicle.
The ability to carry the sensor packs on these vehicles is highly limited, which actually offers a lot of innovative approaches-- LIDAR-based and vision-based systems that actually have been tried. And one of the key challenges is to small objects such as these wires.
There's this fantastic nonprofit called SUGi. So LiDAR is essentially when you create a 3D scan or a digital twin, if you will, of all of your surroundings.
Sure, sure. So we go from these wonderful images to something that is pretty mundane, which is a picture of a tool, right? But LiDAR is a tool that has been used most recently in archaeology. It's a technology that's been around for several decades now, and it was only recently applied to the region where I work by some colleagues of mine who work in Belize, Arlen
Let's think really at a large scale. So LiDAR is large-scale in and of itself. But then, the project itself was even larger than any LiDAR project.

And so we work a little bit with the SVA folks, and they actually told me there was someone that I had to meet and her name was Lida , and that is how we started engaging on this. So thank you so much for joining us today.
We've made a lot of progress in perception for self-driving vehicles when we developed an important sensor, the LiDAR. Before we had the LiDAR, all the navigation algorithms used sonar, and sonar has a wide cone of uncertainty. No algorithms worked with sonar.
That's not that much when we're talking about 60,000 square kilometers of an area. So then the LiDAR project comes in and, within a month or two, gives us data for five times that in one year. So when you think of it all, that's the context within which that question that you're asking comes up.

Another thing that we're doing that's very easy for the brain to figure out is we did this collaboration-- oh, sorry-- it's a collaboration that we did with a Google team in the Bay Area where they have LIDAR set up in their office. So we came and tapped into the data stream so that we could tell the location of everything, and then we brought in a blind participant
and will measure, when it is launched in about half a year's time, will measure wind speed and wind direction in a three-dimensional field in cloud-free atmosphere, because the LIDAR, the laser beam, is actually reflected on the molecules and the particles in the atmosphere. An element is coming back to the satellite, and those elements coming back through the velocity of the satellite allows you to retrieve in three dimensions.
Just the rover both does image processing for navigation. It has a lidar mounted on it as well. We have to be careful with the lidar.
So what do we do with those? We do lidar. So this is a lidar airborne laser scan of a piece of the where my wife works on the archeology, the very post interesting period, of the 19th century.
And they have a project, and they're looking at these production sites down here. And the lidar, we can take the trees away quite effectively. So we can see through trees and see the landscape underneath.
So we talk to these folks and we said, how would you like it if we could build an autonomous cargo helicopter that has a lidar that could come in and find a landing zone, and land where you want your supplies. And they all, all of them had experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The overriding thing in our discussion-- our end user was Grandma. It also had a LIDAR, a Velodyne system for pinging its terrain.

So I'll be passing things over to them in a moment and hopping off. Professor, it'd be easy to focus on the technical details of the work because they are impressive, and we will get there. But before we talk about the LiDAR surveys, let's take a step back and focus on the bigger picture. You're lucky in that, in your line of work, you're a time traveler of sorts.

Or we need to swim more. A single autonomous car with a LIDAR generating 750 megabytes of data as it's going down the roads.
It has a lidar mounted on it as well. We have to be careful with the lidar. We take it to other countries because it's export controlled.
And originally the sort of assignment from ONR was make this thing fully autonomous with absolutely minimal dependence on a pilot or a human operator. It has a super duper amazing LIDAR on it that was built for us by Sanjiv Singh and his group at Carnegie Mellon.
