And when we sat down to do the interview-- so I interviewed everyone. And then I transcribed our conversation. And when we sat down into the interview, she said, that was the most healing thing.
But her big chance came in '42 when there was a publication in a French paper from an Italian who had transcribed a speech of Babbage's in Turin, in Italy. This was the only really public presentation Babbage had ever done on the analytical engine.
And some had been searching for a lot long before this song appeared in Terry Zwigoff's movie. He always transcribed his notes immediately and always wrote up a transcript.
And so the theme song, we actually thought the "Tristesse," which is Opus 10, Number 3, etudes, is such a beautiful melody, which I played second to the last. And so we transcribed that to the theme song, so we got this beautiful voice. Her name is pretty fun, Oh Land.
So what I decided instead, was, that I would get all the cassettes of all the interviews, all the transcripts and all the recordings of every interview I ever did. And I had them all like re-transcribed . And I had them all re-transcribed by a medical transcriber. And I told her I want everything, like everything. I want every cough. I want every pause; I want every change in tonality. I want every, uh, uh, every interruption, every background noise. I want any, everything. So I got, you know, twenty thousand plus pages of all these
And he just talked me through everything from his ancestors in Greece through his childhood, his career, his family, his hobbies, all of that. And I had those sessions transcribed . I wound up with a big binder worth of printed out pages-- 90,000 words' worth of him talking.
So here's a body of text-- 26,000 corporate earnings calls. All these corporate earnings calls are transcribed . You guys put them on your site-- the transcriptions of all of your earnings calls.
Which has its own special advantages, and I'm not sure which is better, but email has clearly triumphed over voicemail. So I-- the book was either transcribed into a voice recorder and then typed out or handwritten. So I wrote a lot of it on legal pads with different-- because it was a-- which is a somewhat sensual experience, a tactile
It's kind of not what you want on a vessel that is powered by a nuclear reactor and carries 20 some Trident And it was the most beautifully transcribed , every word written out, spelled perfectly.
And in my case, of course, Waterbury, Connecticut, as luck has it there's also a Lynch family, a Patrick Lynch family in Waterbury, Vermont. And as the names get transcribed they get transcribed like if it shows up on a passenger list, many times passenger lists or census records will have

And then I would be interviewing them, mostly on the phone, through Skype, through videoconferencing, putting all these conversations into conversations, having them transcribed , then editing them out, creating Word documents, sitting in an Ergon chair with my noise cancelling headsets on. And while I was doing this, I just realized all the technology and all the inventions that allowed me to sit in a chair in my room all by myself to sort of find
And it came from Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker. So what we're looking at here is a line that Sonny Rollins-- transcribed lines that Sonny Rollins soloed in improvisation. And what we see here is that there's a beginning note, which is a D. And it ends on a G. And as I said,
They actually serve a purpose. I can write a document, or speak a document and have the words transcribed .
And yet, even without these tricky words, the mapping between spellings and sounds is extremely complex in English. And this actually goes all the way back to the point at which English was first transcribed . And there was a desire at that point to use the Roman alphabet.
So I started interviewing women and just listening really closely to the stories they told in lengthy transcribed interviews.
So the diary was very important, because it had never been transcribed or translated.
I basically recorded the story-- I recorded their words, had them transcribed , and then just minimally edited it, removing "ums" and "ahs"
And that writing is the child's own description of their drawing, which is transcribed by a teacher or a parent.

Which are, that, the books are full of invention, but that is transcribed from my life.
So I went to the National Archive and researched Duke Ellington and had his manuscripts in my hand, the actual penciled manuscripts, transcribed , some,
the most relevant parts of the "Acta." And in some cases, in fact, entire copies of the "Acta Diurna" transcribed .
And we chatted. And it was all taped, videoed, then transcribed , then edited.
And so on the Italian side, you know, they came to the United States. It took me an awful lot of time to find this passenger arrival record because the records weren't digitized, they weren't transcribed . You had to crank through a lot of microfilm.
I didn't have to worry always about writing things down because they were waiting, they were waiting for me to be transcribed on my voicemail. And the only, and I think it's
All of the interviews were done in person over between four to six hours, all recorded on little digital recorders and laboriously transcribed and then edited down.
