But let's talk a little bit about it for this audience right now. Slutty Vegan. Why? OK, so I get that question a lot. So let me give you a little bit of backstory.
Well, we started out in a culture-- depending on where you grew up in this country, because we now have second and even third generation sluts growing up. I love it.But we started out in a culture that said that there was one gold standard of relationships.
I'm a person that strips sometimes. Stop slut -shaming. OK. Fuck you. Going rouge over here.
I was frozen in place hypnotized by the lurid orange graffiti that sprawled across a row of sky blue lockers. 'Samantha is a slut .' The letters didn't look sprayed on. Someone had been at this with a fine brush and a steady hand.
and mentality. I had entered a world, where instead of referring to the woman by name, they're referred to by this combination of their hair color, skin color, and the added word slut or whore. I'd entered a world where every girl is recorded saying she wants it and craves cum.
Permanent harm is done. And the word slut , the idea of slut shaming, sexuality, sexual aggression, rape, was popping up in every single conversation we had with them.
Georgetown Law student, because she had spoke in favor of contraceptives paid for by the government. He called her a slut and lots of other terrible things. I think that people were really offended because she was considered, quote unquote, a civilian.
People probably would've supported it, but not in the way that they do now. But naming it Slutty Vegan was a way to merge the two most pleasurable experiences in life. That's sex and that's food.
But I knew that brokenness was going to turn into something whole, and it did. And it turned into Slutty Vegan. And again, this was only supposed to be a ghost concept.
You don't appreciate financial freedom until you don't have financial freedom. When I first started Slutty Vegan, I'm like me, mine, this is my business.
That's how long it took for my life to just implode. And now I'm slutty girl who shouldn't have been there and I shouldn't have gotten drunk and I shouldn't have done everything that everybody's saying that I shouldn't have done.
Aisha Tyler: Um, hum. could be slutty in my house, that would be great. Right? Like, hey you and me, more than once a month? Let's do this. Um.
But what you don't see are those hours and hours of work and preparation that go into that. Did you think I was a slut overnight? Takes years to have that moment.
And it just didn't ring. So it became "The Ethical Slut ," it remains "The Ethical Slut ," and I'm very proud of it because I have a lifelong career of laundering dirty words.
And they're very, very different experiences. So the first edition of "The Ethical Slut " came out in 1999, is that right?

I just graced the cover of "Ink Magazine" and a plethora of so many opportunities, all because I didn't waver on the name. So I'm so glad that I named it Slutty, and I feel like we have been able to redefine a word that adds power to a name versus it being degrading to women or men.
It hurt even more than the idea that someone had used their magic to murder Sylvia Capley. The idea of some teenager getting stoned and then etching the word slut into history-- it burned in my throat like a swallowed sword. Why them? Why do they get the opportunity to waste this?
So before we start I just wanted to thank you all very much for coming in person. I thought a lot about this event and the fact that "The Ethical Slut " is a title that some people may not be familiar with or comfortable with. And we are in a corporate environment, so I think it's so cool you all came in person.
So first, let's start at the beginning. What is polyamory, and what is an ethical slut ? Why is that the name of your most famous book?
People would say, what are you writing now? We'd say, "The Ethical Slut ." And they all knew what that meant, because they were all sluts . And then when it came time to make a name for the book, when we finished the book and it needed a title,

And so in my mind, I pull all of those things together, and I want you to tap us into what that experience was like growing up and how has that been informative to you on this journey with Slutty Vegan. So I like to say that everything in my life has truly happened in the exact way that it was supposed to happen.
And in real time, I'm coming up with stuff. And out of nowhere, the name Slutty Vegan hit me. So I called my friends up, and they said, Pinky, that is a great name.
It's very, very real and it's very, very possible. I want to talk a little bit about that first day when Slutty Vegan opened. Tell us about that first day on opening day.
I mean it was fun in grade school, you know, trick-or-treating and picking up money for UNICEF and going in costumes and then just being in collage and oh, I'm a slutty football player. But once I graduated and I started working a day job where people still celebrated Halloween, it bothered me.
