And speaking of nostalgia that you brought up, that's so woven into cooking, there are so many beautiful essays, throughout your book, remembering specific moments throughout the season, like the relentless downpour of the monsoon, the closing of the bazaars in rainy day lunch.Can you speak to how you find food plays into nostalgia and memory and how you hope to transport your readers into these moments with these recipes?
And I heard over and over again as I talked to people um for the book, this sort of idea of being told as a child, remembering being told like stop touching everything, you know, you shouldn't be touching everything. It'sdirty or like it's inappropriate to do.
And so yeah, everything working together-- sensory motor systems, thinking about what you're doing, remembering where you've been, and then language-- actually, there's a strong case that evolutionary pressurefor development of language was overcoming food scarcity.
And so I began to research this and said, well, is it possible if these actually were alternate timelines and people were somehow remembering those timelines? And it turns out that it fits into this idea of a simulated reality where you can diverge, you can run different simulations,and you can come back.
