Kindergartners are showing up to kindergarten without their full vaccine regimens. Measles is on the rise in many communities. And measles , by the way, is a vaccine-preventable disease.
Measles is on the rise in many communities. And measles , by the way, is a vaccine-preventable disease. And for me, that's really unfortunate because I know that there are 23 viral families that have the potential to infect humans.
And that's probably true. And measles is a very dangerous disease, explosively contagious.
She was worried. She cabled mama to come home right away. Ada had the measles . For many long days and nights, mama read Ada her favorite books.
You may have to read that book four times a night. I learned that measles was a Dalek disease.
We can prevent malaria by providing insecticide-treated bed nets. We can prevent measles by immunization. We can prevent diarrhea by providing sanitation.
And I know some of what people are thinking makes sense. We don't have measles in this country. People don't know what measles is. They don't know what polio is. They don't know what smallpox is.
And people don't want to think that way. And that's one of the vaccine issues. You don't see measles . You just see a needle coming in, and so you think, "Oh, my baby. And I've heard this stuff." And it is a little daunting. But I don't -- you know, I talk to someone who said, "It's just that I don't want to put a foreign substance in my body."
And so if you cover yourself in carbohydrates, you're shielding yourself from antibodies. This is the virus that causes measles .
There are actually some better-- there's better data now. And we're also learning about measles virus, which acts as an oncolytic. So difficult to treat cancers are now-- they're now exploring measles , injecting measles into these cancers,
for steak in the in the local grocery store is And yet is a little bit harder. And yet there are people there are children sick with measles . Um you know, there are literally outbreaks of measles happening. Um you know, diseases we thought we had tamed,
And we're also learning about measles virus, which acts as an oncolytic. So difficult to treat cancers are now-- they're now exploring measles , injecting measles into these cancers, like glioblastoma multiforme, which is very difficult to treat, pancreatic cancer, another very difficult to treat cancer.
like glioblastoma multiforme, which is very difficult to treat, pancreatic cancer, another very difficult to treat cancer. And in many cases, measles seems to have an impact. Now, I mean, again, is this the be all end all?
or severe malnutrition, you talk about life saved. Because if you don't get treated for measles , or vaccinated, it's very lethal. The baby delivered-- you know that in the countries where we work, most women deliver at home.
So instead of having to send each item to the field in a separate fashion, we know what is needed to respond to a cholera outbreak. We know what is needed to perform an investigation of measles . We know what is needed in case of an earthquake.
We know what is needed in case of an earthquake. So we've designed some kits that's we've called measles kits, cholera kits, earthquake kits, surgical kits, that contain everything from the pen, to the bucket, to the empty biotechs, to the for a number of patients.
So that the teams on the ground, since there is also a lot of turnover, they don't have to relearn about everything. It they know that they're facing a measles outbreak, they know that they just need to figure out how many people they need to cover, and they ask for a measles kit.
Spanish blood in me I know that because I was growing up I made her build me beautiful Spanish missions in my backyard I stole her gold and gave her chickenpox and measles now it's funny especially if you're historically put that in context but but it's a lot of times are going that's also part of it love every part
And yet there are people there are children sick with measles . Um you know, there are literally outbreaks of measles happening. Um you know, diseases we thought we had tamed, whooping cough, and you know, other childhood diseases. There is a direct line that people should be able to see
And if we could, in fact, do this, it would be so much faster, and have so many advantages. And sailors get the MMR, measles , mumps, rubella, vaccine when they enlist.
And so if you cover yourself in carbohydrates, you're shielding yourself from antibodies. So you've got flu, you've got measles , and for the most part this is what's happening.
The one I worry most about is biopathogens. For exponentially declining prices, people can build measles , smallpox, et cetera, put it in a drone, and fly it down our streets. This potential to cause mass havoc is one that is spreading in many areas, not least in the cyber sphere, which, of course, as the nervous system of our new world,
They were even willing to pay us a little bit for that. And so what they highlighted instead was that these vaccines actually protect kids from the measles , mumps, or rubella.
His son had been hit by a cab and was in a coma. And his daughter, one died from measles . But he wrote this whimsy.
For many long days and nights, mama read Ada her favorite books. The fever finally broke, but the measles left her paralyzed and blind." Do you know what "paralyzed" and "blind" mean? I think it means like "blind" means your eyesight is just away, and then "paralyzed" mean you can't move your head or something.
It they know that they're facing a measles outbreak, they know that they just need to figure out how many people they need to cover, and they ask for a measles kit. And those kits are also updated constantly.
So about 19,000 children are dying every day from preventable causes. Now these causes are things like malaria, measles , diarrhea, pneumonia. We can prevent malaria by providing insecticide-treated bed nets.
But they were significant, because these were totally preventable cases of measles .
And so if you cover yourself in carbohydrates, you're shielding yourself from antibodies. So it's a successful strategy, but it's not what a cold virus or a measles virus or it's
And that's probably true. So just to give you an example, there is a measles outbreak going on right now in Minnesota in the Somali-American community,
at it, just as we have rules around taking vaccines for the measles .
This is about a technology. And we can use a technology in any number of ways just as we can use vaccines in the third world." You know, in Africa, the rate of measles is plummeting. It still kills 300,000 people a year. But the only place where it's growing is in this country and Europe. I mean, how shameful is that?
And I mean, even before the pandemic, there were-- you may remember, Karen, there was these measles outbreaks that occurred in New York
But the five most lethal infectious diseases for children have all been in decline over the last 15 years alone-- pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles , and HIV/AIDS.
The plague had taken out a good number of people, but also there was scurvy, there was measles , there was tuberculosis.
It's not viewed as a personal choice in many parts this country, whether you actually get the measles or not.
Now we have vaccine that is effective for 10 years, so we have less reasons to do so. But you have constantly, especially in countries at war or unstable countries, the health system is dysfunctional, so you regularly have cholera outbreaks or measles outbreaks that necessitate an intervention.
Every year we do between eight and 10 million consultation, medical consultation. And the figures that follow are actually interesting, because if you talk about malaria case treated surgical procedure, a baby delivered measles vaccination, or severe malnutrition, you talk about life saved.
the United States. Tuberculosis, scurvy, and measles , other causes of death are not going down as fast as infectious diseases but they're not going up either. Where is this cancer
me. But I'm beginning to think it's fear, and fear is just as infectious as any other virus. And people are afraid of what they hear. They're afraid of autism with vaccines. And it doesn't matter that there have been 3 million kids studied to see whether autism is related to measles vaccines. And that's kind of a study you can do pretty well, because there's a lot of kids that have been vaccinated and a lot of kids who haven't. And if you look at the rate at which autism
