But Halley wasn’t quite right.
Now Halley lives out deep in the solar system, way out beyond the giant planets.
As Halley swung through the inner solar system, we were able to get Giotto to fly by at 68 kilometers a second.
So Edmund Halley -- and you'll guess what the name of this comet is now-- found that there was an apparition on a regular basis of a comet.
It encountered the comet Halley , but at about 21 million kilometers.
And they basically cajoled Halley , who was a young striver at the time, to go up to Cambridge from London, visit Isaac Newton,
It's what we know as Halley 's comet.
But this is the nucleus of comet Halley , about 15 kilometers across.
So at the time of Halley , when we encountered with Giotto, we knew that we wanted to do more than just a brief flyby.
And so Halley said, "Would you please write that up so that we can share it?"
We were there to see Halley 's comet, and it was the first time I realized that the sky is not a dome.
Back in 1692, Edmund Halley was the first to describe Earth’s core as something separate and disconnected from its shell.
A fully-improvised show is-- it's like Halley 's comet on Broadway.
In the 17th century, Edmund Halley proposed the earth was a hollow shell holding a smaller sphere, like a gargantuan Kinder Egg.
It's Halley 's Comet.
They worked on that comet Halley mission and they held it in their hearts.
So it was an amazing project, which is like Halley 's comet
And so the European Space Agency launched a mission called Giotto as part of an international fleet to go and encounter Halley .
If you know Comet Holley, it used to be called Halley 's Comet.
And at the time, NASA wanted to send a spacecraft to Halley 's Comet.
It was the very first comet encounter that any spacecraft had ever had a year before the Halley , so the "Go USA" kind of stuff.
But still, even at that distance-- and this was a discovery as well-- Halley 's Comet influenced the solar magnetic field.
And Isaac Newton actually writes "Principia Mathematica" in order to settle a coffeehouse argument between Hooke, Halley , and Wren.
But they found people-- they, people from the Holley family stepped forward and said, we pronounce it Holley, not Halley .
So they got back from that trip, and the Royal Society that had funded them, based on the recommendation of Halley
At base, no one really needs to know the return date of Halley 's comet.
And for that first return of Halley 's Comet, they had two
As I said, you and I have lived all of our lives without knowing the next return date for Halley 's Comet.
And another one was Halley , the astronomer who discovered comet.
Paul's Cathedral, and another one was Halley , the astronomer who discovered Halley 's Comet.
And so my old professor Carl Sagan was a big advocate of this making a solar sail as it’s called to catch up with Comet Halley which you may sometimes hear as called Halley ’s
