there and it just won't come out of the other end um so a direct drive means the extruder is right next to the nozzle um kind of like the one you're passing on this side like the the drive systemsgoes right down into the barrel and that's the the advantage of that is that you could print very flexible filaments cuz there's really not a lot where it
never gets out of whack very very well built cool all right so now we get to the extruder um so like I explained before this is a kind of a very fancy hot glue gun and it's pretty simple the way it works um the extruder basically consists uh it starts off at the top where the material comes in it has
like a noodle so it just comes out in one stream usually um all right so the main part of the extruder is kind of this one um um it's not the most important because they all have to kind of work together a 3D printer is one of those machines that if one part doesn't work right nothing really good comes out
these around you guys want to see it um this was like the really homemade 3D printed version of an extruder um I'll pass this way um and that's uh one of my first prototypes used this
stuff um away from the from the actual hot end itself so so you could keep your head or your extruder very light and having that extruder light makes makes things move faster and you could do a lot of uh better mechanical stuff for that um the disadvantage of that is that
of doing it is the like the top one it's uh there's just four nozzles there and you have four extruder Motors driving that and extruding and you have software dealing with which one should extrude uh first um the disadvantage about that is that every nozzle in this type of setup has to be exactly in the exact same

got the Gantry and the frame sometimes they're they're together uh but the kentry Gantry is what makes everything move in 3D space um the extruder is what kind of spits out the material basically um this type of 3D printer is uh if you simplify it's basically a hot glue gun a very fancy hot glue gun it just melts
and Y Direction and then the Z moves in a certain way or you could move uh uh or you can move the the extruder which is dispensing the the material that could just stay steady and you can move the platform in X and Y or you could do a combination of those where the extruder just moves in X and then moves up also
that or your like ET ET a sketch uh that's the way of doing it um you move in two directions uh uh for the extruder and then the the Z platform would move down or or or you can move everything up
straight cool and uh and since you're kind of moving the extruder um in every direction uh you kind of need the extruder to be pretty light um you can't put like a it's not you can't it's a Once you put like a heavy motor on there then you have a lot of inertias going back and forth and um that's just that

into the material and feeds it through and you you always have the wheel on the other side to just put the pressure on it um there's some extruders there there's like another 20 ways to make an extruder but this is the most common uh because you could have teeth on both sides if you want things like that but it gets
you have uh a hysteresis uh which means like a little delay you have a little bit of a delay every time the the the the extruder motor pushes the filament there's a little compression trickle compression going on and then it comes out um so in software you have to deal with a little bit more fine-tuning of oh it should
end um cool and and then there's machines that have multi- extruders uh when we started I created a dual extruder machine and found out a lot of techn uh technical issues with doing that it's very difficult um but now they're coming up with different ways of doing it um the the more Brute Force way
I'm like, I don't know what I'm going to do, or how I'm going do it, but I've got to do something. Tube of cold plastic goes through extruder that heats it up too hot plastic, turns plastic to hot frosting,
or the world, or if you're in a space station, then fine. They all have this smart extruder , which just swaps in and out, so if you need to replace it, and it's got a little brain in it, so it knows when you run out of filament and sends a message saying, I'm hungry.

model of somebody actually made a model of a cupcake so you could actually build a 3D model of a cupcake and then we also just for fun made a frosting extruder so that you can automate the Cupcake Decorating process but a cupcake will fit in there as well to give people an idea of the size of stuff um so this is the this is the the
been around forever but it's it does the job it's very simple it's pretty much just a list of XYZ coordinates and a feed rate with some other extruder on extruder off commands sprinkled in there for good measure um it has a little control panel so you can log onto that and move the machine around yourself and then when you're ready to go you can
has support material it's it's literally one of the really hot topics that people are working on right now because uh glue and being getting a Crayola crayon extruder for you know 64 colors of

since you have this really hot thing going on on the tip um that Heat's going to travel up throughout the extruder all the way up as thing as time goes by obviously um so most of these extruders um like this one has a fan in the front and that keeps that top part fighting the cold back down into that heating
could go or Bunch up it's just going right straight down that hot end um cool and and then there's machines that have multi- extruders uh when we started I created a dual extruder machine and found out a lot of techn uh technical issues with doing
uh clever switching mechanism like firmware software combination to do to that all right um and then the another little important thing about uh extruders is that there's some materials like pla that you use and if you notice here there's another little fan on on the machine here that some materials
to be kept warm actually it's complete opposite they need to be kept warm and hot um if not the layer on the bottom all your 3D printing for it um like that orange machine with all the extruders
but the platform is uh why like this one and we'll go over those quick examples so for instance um if you ever seen machines like this they're kind of more boxy um and stuff they usually work in the X and Y as the extruder and then the Z in the platform so the the head basically moves like a
the way it's designed is since the if the head is very heavy it gets even more complicated to make all the belts really tight and the motor stronger and all that so instead what they do is they put the extruder somewhere else and they feed into it and I'm going to explain about that uh in a little bit and that kind of compromises a little bit of the
where your heater and a sensor is to heat up uh the material at the right temperature for what you're working with um and it comes out of the a lot smaller hole um so that's basically how an extruder Works does that make sense to everybody the
