-Comets are really important.
Comets actually enable us to look back into what the solar system was like over four billion years ago.
Comets are named for the people that discover them, so it's unfortunate that Bob Smith didn't discover this one.

So investigating comets to try to understand whether the water in comets is the same as the water we have on the Earth is a clue to our own origins

Talk a little bit about what comets and asteroids are and how they are different from each other.
So classically we have this idea that comets formed in the very cold outer reaches of the solar system.
So they look very much like the comets I described at the beginning.
And we always talk about Oort Cloud comets and, neato, we have what we call long period comets , which are these comets that come into the inner solar system
But then we get these comets coming in at really random angles into the-- so basically I should probably just sidestep a little bit.
So I've mentioned that comets have a lot of ice and dust in them.
That's the primary nearest source of comets .
NASA has been to several comets and one of the most famous encounters actually did do what you shouldn't do, which is it did stand right in front of Usain Bolt in 2005,
The reason is that the surface of comets is because of these dust covering and these carbon-bearing molecules is not really the primordial material anymore.
You need about 100 million comets to get the water we have on the Earth.
But that's the problem with comets .
comes to the paths of comets and asteroids and meteors, we understand this stuff inside out.
So we actually find that they're kind of of comets , but they are asteroids.
So that tells you that either it was comets from the Kuiper belt and something else mixing, or something happened to the water
Of course, comets are objects which are fascinating and have been fascinating for millennia.
So there's actually complex carbon-bearing molecules in comets .
Well, it's because comets are leftover material from the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
And that way were discovering new meteor streams from comets as yet undiscovered, but whose orbits intersect those of the Earth.
And so just like the guys who find asteroids and comets -- and they don't have transmitters on them.

And others ended up in one of the homes of where the comets live now.
It's a kind of a continuously updated list of potentially hazardous asteroids and comets , which astronomers are studying and they need to understand better how they move on their orbit
And then it also really turned the books on how we thought comets formed.

I'm going to start off by talking a little bit about comets , and why we're interested in comets , and why we want to go there.
And the way we do that is we have to go and find these comets .
