I now work on our cloud project, but for most of my five plus years here at Google, I've been working alongside our People Operations team

But I will say that for me, it all rests in the mystery of consciousness, the hard problem of consciousness, as Dr. David Chalmers calls it, this stubborn fact that no matter how neurological scientists try and do these crazy backflips to explain consciousness, they just can't.

But let me say a couple of things just very quickly. One is I think that with respect to the sorts of challenges that people like Chalmers make, some of that should be treated in a more critical way where you say, no, this kind of barrier is not real or this problem for a materialist view is not real.

So I think a first move that one should make is to reorient our thinking about the problem in a way that's more critical about the sort of imaginable separability of the mental and the physical, the basis for the arguments of Chalmers and others. So criticize that. Then choose the right thing to explain.

In the book, I describe those that I find the most compelling, or the most radical, perhaps, as well. The big question, the so-called hard problem of consciousness, as articulated by David Chalmers , is, how could it be that a collection of mindless, thoughtless particles like electrons, quarks, and protons can somehow come together and, in their aggregate, turn on the lights?
Where in the world does that come from if the ingredients themselves show no evidence of having any such qualities? Now, one answer to that question-- and in fact, it comes from David Chalmers , and others, as well-- is maybe the particles do have consciousness. You look at that, you're like, really?
