I don't know if you've ever read "The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection." But he did all these experiments with roses and bees and barnacles -- he was just really into it-- to make sure what he was observing, his hypothesis, was correct. And then this guy Russel Wallace-- and there's a whole bunch of people, and I'm right there with you, who celebrate Russel Wallace, as he came up with the same idea
of all things. And so for at least one of the kids, their whole life as they were growing up, they knew nothing but dad working on barnacles . And the story goes that visiting some friends they kind of looked around and were wondering, well, where does your dad do his barnacles ?
It doesn't have to be big, but it can be helpful. Or I talk about habit barnacles . You already have habits, so just glob something on there.
And the story goes that visiting some friends they kind of looked around and were wondering, well, where does your dad do his barnacles ? Every kid's dad must work on barnacles was the idea. And some of their studies, some of their investigations were just fun but always an interesting scientific point behind them.
So you guys, there's mutations that happen natural-- I mean, every time you try to make a copy, there's going to be a change. Dandelions and sea jellies, barnacles , they're all doing it like crazy out there.
more resilient and change your life for good um so when you hear the word change what's your first response excitement butterflies or the fear because as someone who cleaved like a barnacle to the state quo until recently my response was fear um I was terrible at making
on a range of mutual-- I mean, that stuff that just switches you off immediately. Unless we can shift all of that, scrape those barnacles off the boat, then you-- and we often use Google in this context-- will disrupt us even more. And I often ask people, who do you think will be more powerful in 10 years time, Google or Britain?
But all I could see-- those beautiful tree-like extended tentacles were not extended. They're, you know, the classic gooseneck barnacles , but it was nice to be able to look at them in a slightly different way and to visually isolate them in the photograph.
But, yeah, there are also other organisms like that little shrimp. There's a little shrimp, and it spins a thread, actually, which is midway in strength and elasticity between spider silk and the kind of cement that barnacles use to fix themselves to the hulls of ships.
And so there are some interesting little snippets of getting some sense of how the kids were involved at different times. So one anecdote, for example, that's pretty well-substantiated comes from one of the kids who, for about an eight year period, Darwin famously immersed himself in the study of barnacles of all things. And so for at least one of the kids, their whole life as they were growing up, they knew nothing
but dad working on barnacles . And the story goes that visiting some friends they kind of looked around and were wondering, well, where does your dad do his barnacles ? Every kid's dad must work on barnacles was the idea.
subjects. Every one of these books has interesting experiments, some of them pioneering, where Darwin made fundamental discoveries in different aspects of ecology, evolution, botany, behavior. This is just a sampler of topics, orchids, barnacles , inheritance, the construction of B-cells, expression of emotions, pollination mechanisms.
not have really realized where they were and fell by accident, but they've been more considered jumpers. It is illegal to jump off the Pier, but that's just like being illegal to commit you this, they're not so worried about the fall, it's when you try to, try to rescue yourself and grab onto one of the pilings, because of all the barnacles on the pilings,
