They haven't seen him in two months and they leave food outside of his or her door and they're shutting down the government. You've done visual arts , you've been a director, you've been a screenwriter, an author, doing stand-up.
And so, that takes me to this first slide which is two different photos that I took in grad school. I went to school visual arts and I did an MFA in photography. And they sort of said in the beginning, go out and take photos of whatever you're drawn to and then bring them back and we'll
And maybe it's not the music. Maybe it's in visual arts where you're seeing it more. Maybe it's in, you know, the world of graphic novels, for example, is blowing up in America, you know?
And I think I've been very affected as an artist not just by the literature of surrealism, but actually by the visual arts of surrealism-- by the paintings of Rene Magritte, by the films of Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. And I think their influence is here somewhere in this book.
And she was talking about the wrinkles on my forehead. In the visual arts , photography is all about how do we convey, communicate with light.
I think yeah. I think when you're a visual artist, I think when you're any kind of artist, you kind of see things. You know, what I should say that what I realize about all visual arts is that it's basically arrangements and shape. Or you're basically arranging -- you're taking whatever shape you have, whether it's an empty room or an empty canvas. And it's funny with buildings.
When I say creative, you can do anything from bake cookies to-- there's all kinds of creative pursuits out there. It doesn't have to be visual arts . It could be audio, whatever.
But the history of Deaf Spotlight, I'll just give a little bit of that history. We do cinema as well as visual arts and performing arts, those are our three areas of expertise.
And I mean that broadly. I'm not talking just theater and visual arts . I'm talking about broadcasting, TV, film, in radio, and so on.
And today, we're talking about series. And there's a huge movement in visual arts that's happening right now. There's something going on in performing arts right now.
I went to a few different schools, and that's what really mattered to me. So I ended up going to the School of Visual Arts , in Manhattan, because they had a lab filled with SGIs, which I guess is appropriate for this building, right?
So the book looks at the impact that this new technology has had. And Google has certainly been very involved in many of the projects looking at visual arts , music, the written word. But also one of the strong stories in the book is, what about mathematics?
And I so far have not gotten bored of it. Stacks of money. Probably something in the visual arts .
But something that was really interesting about Ruscha is that he was one of the first artists to forge a relationship with his contemporaries in Hollywood. Of course, so much art goes on in LA, especially now in terms of visual arts , but at the time there wasn't that much. Really, the creative output coming out of LA was mostly through film. And Ruscha was in a really unique position in that he had one foot in the visual art world and one foot
And I thought at the time, back in around 2000, what better way to convince people that optimization is broadly applicable, than to show them that it could be used in an area where they might not suspect that it would have any use at all, visual arts . So "opt art" is a term that I coined myself, a rather arrogant thing to do.
That's the ultimate irony. Right, right. And you're doing visual arts and having gallery shows. Right. And you're doing at least one traveling live performance every year-- multi-city.
And this was Saul Williams, a spoken word artist. I'm curious how you feel about the popularization of First Friday slash Art Murmur in Oakland and the notoriety that's bringing to especially the visual arts scene of Oakland.
Like Jonathan said, you know I worked in a completely different field before, but I was always someone who was very much attracted to visual arts .
This was after I had gotten out of high school. And I was going to the School of Visual Arts in New York to be an animator. That was my-my goal. But I found out there was a class being
