The words Cervantes used to refer to the build up or spooling up of narrative trends, brings this out.
They are drawn from spinning linen thread, "rastrillado, torcido y aspado" and are reasonably well translated by Smollett's as
"twisted, reeled and raveled," but in the original they have, at least for me, perhaps because Spanish is my native language, a more violent or literal inflection.
