And I was in the South African government as Nelson Mandela's economic advisor, and ran the State Development Bank for Southern Africa owned by the South African government. And so, it was really a delight to be asked by OUP to write this short book, but a big challenge.
But my plan after I left university, I was really interested in wildlife conservation, and I planned a trip and a friend of mine. And we went to southern Africa for six months. We hired a pickup truck.
And I had just never seen anything like it. I grew up in southern Africa during peace time so I had never seen a war. I'd never seen the images of women in war, and I knew that was a story I had to pursue, in whichever way, shape, or form I could.
And only a fraction of it is about science. And in southern Africa , it's largely linked to HIV, as I mentioned.

We wanted actually to meet these Chinese, go into Africa, and for the 21st century adventure for them for looking for a new place for the development for themselves.
