And it all kind of started for me was I went to school at Chico State up in northern California. Sierra Nevada 's brewed there, so in the early '90s it was still kind of a small brewery. That's where I first got the taste of beer other than like your typical light American lager.
New Belgium does a million. Sierra Nevada does just over a million.
That wasn't a croissant. Sierra Nevada came to us and said, we can't sell our beer either.
So Jack did 400 and change barrels. Sierra Nevada , which was inspired by Jack McAuliffe, is now doing well over a million. And they're going to continue to grow with the new facility as well.
So when we move on to the next beer, which is going to be the AleSmith IPA, think about some of those aromas that I just talked about. Sierra Nevada has a video where they do their Bigfoot Barleywine every year in the same open fermenters.
tossed out of the book. Sierra Nevada book, and that will be my retirement project.
There was brands everywhere. Sierra Nevada was really going gangbusters.Dogfish Head came on line.
There's a Timothy Taylor Fuggles and there's a Sam Smith's Fuggles. Or you could do the Cascade thing. And you could say, "Oh, look. I think I'll try a Sierra Nevada cascade or I'll try a an anchor cascade or what." We could do allthat. But more of that uh later on. You see, it's all about presentation. It's
New Belgium does a million. And Sierra Nevada took a step back at 6% last year.
It's a really nice, refreshing beer. And Sierra Nevada is now the second largest craft brewery in America. They just celebrated 34 years.
Nevada. And they're working very carefully to try to reestablish their control of those sites. The Sierra Nevada is 5,771 meters high. Just over 3 1/2 miles.

This is the Tairona settlement that was first inhabited around 400 A.D. And at one point, the entire Sierra Nevada was inhabited by the Tairona culture, particularly the Northeastern part near the sea, which is now the location of the city of Santa Marta.
So good afternoon. My name is Jose . I come from the Sierra Nevada Santa Marta in Colombia. And I live in a sacred village called .
And a number of breweries started up as a result of that. I think you know Sierra Nevada . Ken had a bicycle repair shop and later a home brew shop before he started Sierra Nevada in his garage.
which you add the hops and the hop variety as well will have a phenomenal impact. Um uh in this country something like Cascade that Sierra Nevada used it gives a sort of a grapefruit like character. Uh if you go to a Czech style logger then you probably get a a large a
Así que imagínate si me ha dado cosas el deporte. me acuerdo en el carro de Sierra Nevada , antes de bajar a pistas, me pasaban por la consulta médica y me pinchaba antibiótico.
And then-- they all just-- they all know each other. And it was-- It was Warren at Sierra Nevada , recommended-- I'm in a group in LA. A reggae band in LA called The Lions.
And he went back up to Chico. And then he co-founded the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, which is what we're drinking right now. We're drinking their Kellerweis, which is a German-style wheat beer that is-- going to my cheat sheet again-- 4.8% alcohol.
are doing to help combat these threats. So the Kogis are from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. It is located in northern Colombia, on the Caribbean coast near the border with Venezuela.
It's the highest coastal mountain range in the world. The glaciated peaks of the Sierra Nevada , the melt water from these glaciated peaks feeds all the rivers that flow in all directions. And these are very sacred to the Kogis.
They're also working on cleaning up the beaches. Most of the beaches in the Sierra Nevada are littered with garbage. So this is one site where the Kogis have been able to clean up.
So one of the interesting we've been able to do is map sacred sites. Because these people climb to the sacred lakes high in the Sierra Nevada and then bring offerings down to the seashore. And so it's not just a question of making a bow-and-arrow map where you put the name of the river and the name of the village, but mapping
Now, we were able to use this remote mapping to find these people and to leave them alone, but to find them and enact protection. We're currently working in Antioquia and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the Caribbean coast, which are our two major work areas outside of the Amazon.
I would say that would be our fine friends up in Chico. In Chico. Sierra Nevada . OK. But one of the things that Anchor did was revive the rye whisky revolution.
Since we're in California, if you were to take a picture of the eventual reserve, the size of it, if you put one edge on the Golden Gate, the other edge would go far into the Sierra Nevada . Imagine one very lonely paved road bisecting it, the rest of it all wildlife.
You can't make up these characters. So my generation were inspired by the likes of Sierra Nevada , and Red Hook, and these breweries mostly out west. There were only a couple in the east.
It's hard to imagine the awe they must feel to seeing such a spectacular landscape for the first time after living so many years in darkness. So the Kogis live on the north side of the Sierra Nevada . This is one of the most important regions for biodiversity conservation because it receives the most rain anywhere in the Sierra Nevada ,
Much respect to Ken and everything that he's built with Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
In the mountains of the elder brothers, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, this highest coastal mountain range on Earth two hours from Miami Beach by air,
Jack did not, but that only lasted about six years. But it had a huge impact on several important people like Ken Grossman from Sierra Nevada , Paul Shipman from Red Hook.
It was an important six years though, because there were other members of what I call the pioneer group-- people who started before 1984 building craft breweries. So Ken Grossman from Sierra Nevada visited Jack and the brewery at New Albion. Paul Shipman, the guy who Caleb mentioned, from Redhook-- he came there, the guy from Goose Island in Chicago.
I think you know Sierra Nevada . Ken had a bicycle repair shop and later a home brew shop before he started Sierra Nevada in his garage. Ken is an amazing engineer and tinkerer, and to this day, the new brewery he's building now in North Carolina-- he's there every day, very much

There's microbes that are still chewing away at all the mercury that's up in the Sierra Nevada from mining during the gold rush and slowly degrading
So we've sort of had this very strange history with beer in the US. And as people are emptying their glasses, we can start to open up the Kellerweis from Sierra Nevada . Don't be shy about doing that.
So when we move on to the next beer, which is going to be the AleSmith IPA, think about some of those aromas that I just talked about. So after Jack McAuliffe came and left, and the new breweries like Sierra Nevada opened up, we had a fun couple years of what was called micro brew.
In the age of climate change, these people are clearly the masters of survival. They're the only indigenous group that lives and manages ecosystems from the snow fields at the top of the Sierra Nevada , 15,000 feet high, all the way down into the oceans. We never say or think that these indigenous peoples know everything.
So the Kogis live on the north side of the Sierra Nevada . This is one of the most important regions for biodiversity conservation because it receives the most rain anywhere in the Sierra Nevada , due to the proximity of the ocean.
And, of course, Sierra Nevada -- it's been a huge leader here in the craft beer movement.
But for these societies, many of which are feeling the direct and immediate impacts of climate change, be it the melting of the ice on the Sierra Nevada
They still dress traditionally, they still live traditionally. And Brian has spearheaded much of this work in partnership with the Koguis, who live from the Caribbean beach all the way to the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta-- primarily between 500 and 200 meters when they move up and down, which makes them experts in dealing with climate change because they understand how

So when we move on to the next beer, which is going to be the AleSmith IPA, think about some of those aromas that I just talked about. And again, if you go onto YouTube at some point, Sierra Nevada does another beer.
I will say this, that outside of the uncontacted tribes in the Amazon, these are the most traditional people in the Western hemisphere. When the Europeans first came to California 500 years ago, the Incas ruled Peru, the Aztecs ruled Mexico, and the Kogis ruled the Sierra Nevada . There are no Aztecs, text there are Incas, but the Kogis thrive.
So the Kogi Mamos tell the rest of the community what to plant, where to plant it, when to plant it, and they always stress equilibrium and diversity. So they make sure that each of the fields is planted with many different crops, which is a way to avoid risk in the Sierra Nevada , which is a very-- the weather changes very frequently.
But then nowadays obviously, you know, we had to learn to coexist with other people. And so now we need to be able to explain to the world that in the sacred site, in the Sierra Nevada , that's where our wisdom, our spirituality, our culture, that's where these things are kept.
So that's one of the reasons I think you should pick it up. If you're still not sure, the book has praise from the founders of Anchor, New Belgium, Sam Adams, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada , Deschutes, and even the CEOs of Miller, Coors, and Heineken.
you want some examples in this country where you can get some of these characters, try something like Stella Artois for a late hop character. It's a wonderful late hop character. Or for a dry hop character, then go no further than Sierra Nevada . The Sierra Nevada pale. It's a classic example of this dry hop character. So straight away we see
