So you see, Pocahontas has some real staying power, right?

One way I could have told the end of the Pocahontas story might be that in the past two years, eight tribes in Virginia

And all the First Families of Virginia wanted to prove they were descended from Pocahontas.

All of our aristocratic families have worked very hard to establish they're descended from Pocahontas.

I mean I’d be honored if somebody were to call me Pocahontas.

And that's ironic, because no connection to the one from "Pocahontas" mythology.

But if you learned it the way I did, we all know that Pocahontas saved John Smith from the Jamestown colony

What did happen, though, was that Pocahontas married a man named John Rolfe.

And so there it is in the Capitol rotunda, the "Baptism of Pocahontas."

you're going to hit at least one person who says they are a direct descendant of Pocahontas.

And that becomes, once again, the story of Pocahontas.

The idea that people somehow feel comfortable enough to cheer and laugh when Donald Trump is mocking somebody by calling them Pocahontas, right.

In our part of the world down in the DC area, the mid-Atlantic, the origin myth is Pocahontas and Jamestown.

One, the most striking, perhaps, is there is a huge painting of the baptism of Pocahontas.

In Virginia, they had a huge society of people who labored mightily to establish that they were, in fact, descendants of Pocahontas.

These were the aristocrats of the United States, and they wanted to be known as descendants from Pocahontas.

Then, of course, in the 1990s, Pocahontas had a good year.

looking for a name everybody would recognize to hurl as an insult against a non-Indian pretending to be an Indian, the president would land on Pocahontas.

And I thought, I wonder what the 10-year-old tomboy, the real Pocahontas thinks about this Pocahontas up on the screen.
