know that a lot of mainstream novels follow through on that. I think that this book is plotted suspensefully and written in a more dense and literate tone and so it sort of falls between the stools a little bit but to people who are used to sort of book clubbooks, mainstream literary fiction, it feels faster. It feels more taut and suspenseful and that's worked in my favor.
And I work the best, actually, between 10:00 and 1:00, because that's like my quiet time. I plotted that in. Then, you know, friends.
limit for computing. He did that. I plotted it on this curve, so here's that same graph that we saw. If you were to extrapolate the trend out to that physical limit, it would take us about three decades, so to 2041 or so.
He took the metabolic rates of different animals from a small dove at 150 grams to a large steer at 680,000 grams, and then he plotted them against their mass on a log log plot. And as expected, all the data did fall on a straight line.
And I would argue that admitting to that is even more shameful in the social media era, where we're all incentivized to make our lives look like well-plotted movies, that the decisions we made five years ago were correct for us, and that we've planted the correct seeds in our life that have led to the beautiful flowers.
So the higher the surprisal, the more unpredictable the word is in the language model. Now I've plotted reprisal against two things. On the left, it's plotted against fixation time, or how long the eyes stay on a particular word.
And so these are data from a recent World Bank report. And I've plotted the percentage of children, age 10, who show what we call below baseline reading comprehension. And these pupils-- this is really very poor reading.
And in fact, one way to make sense of this is by looking at the absolute sales of the products. I have plotted here the market share, which is the relative sales of products. If we look at the absolute sales of products, what we've found is that the absolute sales of all kinds of products,
There is a pretty strong relationship between life satisfaction and GDP per capita. This is plotted on log coordinates. So the relationship in reality is highly curved linear-- that is $1 means a lot more to a poor person
And then visually, I was taking cues from Hennessy's visual legacy, which is really done of all of these calligraphy types. And I plotted all of that into this visual score, where every vertical line is one beat-- so again, 200 beats-- to create the visual centerpiece of the branding on this special edition.
We have these slides-- we still have them-- that have meaningful on one axis and big on the other axis. And we had plotted different things. Among the shortlist was to do something in health care.
It's called metabolic rate, namely how much food you need to eat per day to stay alive. And that's plotted on the vertical axis. And on the horizontal axis is the size.
And on the horizontal axis is the size. And it's plotted logarithmically, up by factors of 10. And what you see is something extraordinary.
you would expect these points to be all over this graph-- they've all lined up on a very simple straight line when plotted in this way. And of course you plotted logarithmically at first because to get a mouse and an elephant-- if you try to put the mouse here and you wanted to put the elephant on the same graph, and it were linear, of course it would be somewhere, I don't know, Tacoma, I guess.
Almost everything that can be measured looks like this. It wasn't plotted this way.
So I'd start off with these topics, and you'll find them actually quite interesting. So I actually plotted it out for everybody, but it's in the book.
Basically, each one of those dots represents a certain amount of freight being processed through the city. So they plotted this onto the map of Manhattan, and then created nine-ish different zones of equal freight density.
So you can think of that disk as a pancake. These planets that are plotted here for you are dynamically compact systems. These are planets that are orbiting pretty close to one another, so that's why we call them compact.
But what I am is I'm a consistent writer. When I originally plotted it, it was between 32 and 36 books, depending on which books got split and things like that.
I've carefully plotted things.
the fish plotted here are overfished and overfishing is occurring.
So I plotted an eight-issue storyline because I knew that issue eight is when they'd phone you up and say, OK,
criminologists have plotted them over time. Here we have a plot of the number of estimates of homicide in England 1200 to the present plotted on a logarithmic scale from a tenth
southern New Jersey plotted to kill US soldiers including in Fort Dix New
eye but can be plotted if you measure off the walls you can find out exactly where it was but you can't see it
So if Smith had just plotted raw values, well, then every system would need its own chart with a different goal.
So this is an example plotted .
You don't have everything kind of plotted out like a schematic or a blueprint.
for which the data can actually be plotted more continuously. The political scientist Jack Levy has assembled a data set of Great Power Wars. These are wars that involve one
So now we've got juice plotted here with most fructose items. Indeed, we are eating 141 pounds of sugar a year. That's seven ounces a day for every man, woman, and child in America.
to be a little more plotted because there's more time
same way because he has to be very very carefully plotted otherwise you reach a point in his books where you find that
And then I'm going to put my plotted data next to it.
The route, so meticulously plotted on satellite maps, can give hunters a form of tunnel vision.
You know a mystery has to be intricately plotted .
section and it's done it's done plotted specifically in the book to do that but you can start it starts really at charlestown and they're
between sort of the the kind of organized nerdy plotted conscientious
were something else what Hubble realized is that if you plotted the distance to a Galaxy versus its velocity you got a
If you look closely, you can also see some significant drops like this 1918 dip from the Spanish flu pandemic or over here, what appears to be To find out whether this was true, they plotted the data on a log log plot and found a straight line.
Now I've plotted reprisal against two things. On the left, it's plotted against fixation time, or how long the eyes stay on a particular word. And on the right, it's plotted against the probability of the eyes regressing back to a word.
On the left, it's plotted against fixation time, or how long the eyes stay on a particular word. And on the right, it's plotted against the probability of the eyes regressing back to a word. And the key finding is that our eyes spend longer on words that are more surprising as characterized by the language model.
And this is a depiction of that. And in particular, what I've plotted here is what's known as a Lorenz curve, which is a graphical representation of the market share of different products.
Or a 72. So he plotted them on a scatter plot.
That was it. I had not plotted this.
This kind of slightly creepy, scary but intricately plotted .
in any proceeding century. Here I've plotted the 100 worst things that people have ever done to each other that we know of. The numbers come from a man who calls himself an atrocitologist,
shows that the -- how much damage an interstate war has done per war per year plotted decade
But he found the prices of 75,000 pizzas, and he plotted them on a chart, which looks like this.
And so within just 50 years, within just two generations of this carefully plotted out system of dynastic marriages,
And the connection is authentic, and the connection can't really be-- it can't be plotted out.
