phthalates , talc, BHT.
Phthalates , organic solvents, certain metals.
And phthalate and other chemicals that lower testosterone or other androgens can mess this up.
But phthalates are not the only class of endocrine disruptors.
But what about phthalates ?
And what we found was the phthalate syndrome.
I had never heard of phthalates .
They had to measure the phthalates in those samples, which they did beautifully.
they're called antiandrogenic-- those three phthalates were associated with significantly shorter anogenital distance
So we've spoken about these phthalates .
So these are things like phthalates in beauty care products, certain types of plastics like BPA and BPS,
And they put that together and they termed it the phthalate syndrome.
So you're mentioning-- so we have these phthalates .
And then I could see whether differing levels of phthalates were related to outcomes at birth
So I first encountered phthalates when a chemist friend of mine told me I should look at these.
So he told me there were these phthalates , that they were in everybody, the Centers for Disease Control, CDC, had shown that.
So are we then seeing these phthalates or other things getting into the fetus themselves, or is it just the mother's body
Well, the most characteristic property of these phthalates is that they make plastic soft and flexible.
So we found that adult women who had higher levels of certain phthalates -- again, those that lower testosterone-- had more sexual problems, less sexual satisfaction,
And then we sent it to the Centers for Disease Control, got the phthalate levels, brought the babies in,
coming into the infant, and then measured how much phthalate was in the urine right away, and they were directly related.
And he said, Shanna, you should look at phthalates .
So I was like, why should I look at phthalates .
actually, and shown that the males born to exposed females-- exposed to those phthalates in early pregnancy,
We found the human analog of that syndrome so that mothers who had higher exposure to three phthalates that are known to decrease testosterone--
So personal care products and cosmetics, phthalates , phenols, they're in there because phthalates ,
So anything that goes through a plastic tube or comes in contact with soft plastic can absorb these phthalates because they're not bound
And it's not, as I say, just phthalates .
And then just going one step further-- so if you have one or two parents who have been impacted by phthalate syndrome,
There's alcohol, fetal alcohol, but phthalates are kind of unique.
And so when I asked this question, I thought, well, I could measure these phthalates in these urine samples if I get the money to do it, of course.
And I guess then, just to put a pin on it, so we see that these phthalates are altering the general measurements, the AGD.
And we should talk about that because we think that's the primary source of many of these, including the phthalates .
So any way that things come into our body can bring endocrine disruptors into our body, and phthalates in particular.
So if you want a product to be absorbed into the skin or, for example, into a plant for a pesticide, you might put phthalates in there.
And unless the hospital has made an effort to swap them out for other tubing, they're going to contain phthalates .
So this tells us that, when you pass a nutrient through one of these tubes, it's going to absorb those phthalates .
