With the influx of African Americans, Baltimore soon became residentially segregated, and the construction of the B&O railroad displaced several African Americans into already filled slums. Overcrowding and the lack of sanitation in these slums caused an outbreak of typhoid and tuberculosis of epic proportions. One black neighborhood was grimly nicknamed lung block.
