It's planning. And as a puzzler and a magician, I operate in that intersection between preparation and misdirection . Now, what this involved was a principle called "the illusion of free choice." And here's what that principle is.
This is important. So what I'm doing here is I'm manipulating your attention. So I'm using misdirection to prevent you from seeing something that's happening right in front of your eyes. So I'm using lots of different types of cues.
So that's the real sweet spot. Little bit of misdirection in these, right?
The, umm, you know, the finger aside the nose. You know that's how he goes up the chimney supposedly. What that is is that's actually a classic case of magician-still misdirection , you know? He puts his finger on the side of his nose and you automatically -- if a little kid is there seeing -- looks at that and doesn't see Santa
Now, I said that the gasp is really important, because what's interesting here is that it's not a real magic trick. We just use this to study misdirection . Because, of course, a magician wouldn't be stupid enough to do this right in front of your eyes.
--to work out what Yann is attending to. And we use that to study misdirection . Thank you very much, Yann.
But I also know that none of that comes for free. There’s been a lot of misdirection about talking about MoCap, like it’s going to actually do the job for anybody. It’s just a pencil, and it’s only as good.
Because, of course, a magician wouldn't be stupid enough to do this right in front of your eyes. But we can use this to try and scientifically study misdirection to get a closer insight into why you fail to see certain things, but possibly see others. But as I started off saying, magic is all about creating a cognitive conflict.
I acknowledge right up front that it's all science. It is all planning and preparation and the art of misdirection and understanding human behavior. And most magicians are not that way.
OK. Let's try this. I'm going to give you a little demonstration of misdirection -- misdirection -- misdirection . Let's see. I'm gonna make this fair here.
They're just going to do it. And then what you can do is use misdirection . And nudge them a little bit further towards that, because he's got oddly symmetrical scars on his back, which has a justification
founder of the University of Virginia, all those things about the life of the mind, and equality, and the liberty of conscience, all of that is part of the Jefferson legacy. But it's also one of the great acts of misdirection , because it sends us in the opposite direction of his political career and what that teaches us. I think it was quite on purpose.
Hollingworth's career change got me thinking. Maybe practicing law isn't all that different from performing magic. The most powerful weapon in both lawyers and magicians arsenals is misdirection . Uh Justice Slidini misdirected an audience's attention away from the billiard ball's true location, which was
I just wave the magic wand on it. The ball disappears. This is all about misdirection . So keep an eye on the ball.
able to see this, and to saying, I won't believe it and I'll see it with my own eyes. And yet, a lot of this research on misdirection has shown that where you look doesn't necessarily matter, in that we often have instances where people are actually looking at the light or something else, and yet they still don't see it.
And this is something that it's easy to relate, but it's not necessarily easy to explain. So then does having you bring your expertise in kind of physical misdirection , sleight of hand,
And I interviewed a whole bunch of different roboticists and computer scientists, and eventually came to the conclusion that it was not really for a long time. And I think this idea of the robot butler or the robot teacher is sort of-- it's almost a misdirection , you know? It's kind of a Hollywood idea, where really what we should be thinking about is these smaller point solutions and task-specific systems.
Mhm. All clear over here? And what he means by that-- or what he meant by that was magic often relies on misdirection , or directing the audience's attention from one area to another.
But the way we do it is we are doing a trick and have no special powers, which means the trick has to be a lot stronger, because what you've done is you've stripped away all misdirection , all the stuff you can think about. And especially smart people, while you're saying to yourself, well, certainly you can memorize the book.
And, in fact, it might be saying it is impossible to present a clear answer to some of these questions about consciousness or gender or AI But it's exactly where you wanted the audience to go with it, which is-- Misdirection .
So our brain's far more like the battery on our phone than we let ourselves believe. If you look at some of the big tech firms, I think the tech firms to some extent have sort of been permitted a bit of misdirection
And I was doing a show called "Spin City" and I was finding myself doing scenes where I was sitting on my hand because it just wouldn't stop. And it just was-- I mean, everything I did was-- I was acting and I was doing my job, but I was involved in misdirection and sleight of hand and just finding ways to lean on desks and to-- because my tremor, if I did something, it would rest.
This is like a 40-minute workshop on the principles of neurosurgery. So, grab those knives and good luck. I can't possibly explain to you exactly how to become a leader in 40 minutes. But here's what I can do. There is more mythology, misdirection , superstition, and generalized academic babble about leadership than almost any business subject. I can bust the most dangerous myths once and for all for you.
