How to pronounce “messier 87” in English

It's about 6 and 1/2 million light years away.And if we zoom in on one of them, this giant elliptical galaxy is Messier 87, M87.It's a large, well-known galaxy.

I'm sure a lot of you remember this from the news last year.This is the very famous image from the Event Horizon collaboration, which took an image of the supermassive black hole at the center of Messier 87.It's one of the biggest nearby galaxies to us.

What does this look like in real life?Well, we have to go back to our picture of the black hole at the center of Messier 87 now.And I'm going to zoom out and just show you in terms of the scale of the entire galaxy.

And notice the scale we're on here is 0.005 light years.I'm going to zoom out to 100,000 light years here and show you what it looks like when that's obviously at the very center of this galaxy, Messier 87.And now you can see this huge, big jet that is thrown out from the accretion disk around the black hole.
