Malcolm , just to kick this off, what would you like to tell us about this new book and why you chose to write it?Well, it's a book called "David and Goliath." And it's about underdogs, misfits, and the art of battling giants.
There's a lot of chaos and fighting and stuff going on. Malcolm McLaren and some other people were trying to put this-- kind of say it's all part of-- recapitulating what the situationists had been doingin the late '60s.
Just going back to, we're talking about the work environment. So Malcolm Gladwell in his book "Outliers," he talks about meaningful work. So what is meaningful work?
And he's got a beautiful voice. Meets Malcolm Gladwell. Yeah, meets Malcolm Gladwell. So that's who I am.
It still sounds weird, but I remember there was one guy I tutored, and my gift to him at the end of the tutoring was a copy of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," which, coming from me, was probably a pretty weird thing for him. But he, years later, followed up with me and thanked me for that.
And after a while in the same field, you become an expert. Read Malcolm Gladwell. When he talks about the mastery, he says 10,000 hours. How many thousands of hours have I spent?
I was in a coma three weeks. And Malcolm came every day. And I was like, wow.
The core underpinning of the Citizen Schools idea is the notion of more time, more time for learning. And Malcolm Gladwell's idea is that sometimes you just need those 10,000 hours to get goo at anything. And one of the biggest differences between upper and lower income kids is while their school day is the same, their learning day is very different.
