And this is despite the fact that he always told me he was never going to be a doctor and follow in my footsteps. He will be actually starting a fellowship in New York at Sloan Kettering next year in pediatric hematology oncology. So I hate him because life for him was so easy going through school.
And so we really encourage these patients to go on clinical trials. And for no particular reason other than it was an open clinical trial at Sloan Kettering at the time, this woman enrolled on the Everolimus study. And despite the fact that this drug really didn't work well in anybody else, by April 2010 she had achieved a near complete response.
And this type of tumor has a particularly grim prognosis. So if you look at our series of this type of cancer at Sloan Kettering over the past 10 years, essentially all patients with this disease die of their disease.
There's something missing in how we're approaching these. 1997, I was a trainee at Sloan-Kettering. A kid, 25 year old kid, had germ cell tumor of the brain, the lung, and the liver.
But I didn't feel comfortable telling even my colleagues that, look, we've got a deck due tomorrow, but I actually haven't been home because I had to run to New Jersey to see my mom, go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering to be with Peter during his appointment, oh, pick up my daughter from daycare and the nanny, and then have to bathe her and put her to sleep.
You might not see that therapist again. But for me to be able to get access to work with the Cleveland Clinic and Sloan Kettering, it had to be a gift.
So could we expand out the number of patients who would benefit? And the real inspiration for this work was this clinical trial that we ran in Sloan Kettering a few years ago. So this was a trial we ran back in 2008.
