of ideas. Ideas need time to evolve. I break this into four steps, I mean, three steps. There is incubation , that's where the subconscious mind--the subconscious mind, all creative thinkers are subconscious thinkers. The subconscious is really good of doing the first three steps, at defining, borrowing, combining and that's kind of what's going on. You need to put your ideas away, let them incubate. Then, you need to pass judgment on your ideas. You know,
Because I'm certainly not the brightest person in the room, especially when I visit Google. But there's a certain amount of incubation of an idea that you need chew it, you think about it for a long time before you actually sit down and present it.
I think which becomes very important and that's allowing us now to have you know great bread of involvement and we do really do two things that's incubation so that is identifying companies of this of this nature been able to bring them in provide them with the expertise and an infrastructure around them to allow
So it's a very reliable, very cheap method to isolate radiation resistant organisms. And after a period of incubation , we isolated the colonies that grew after the largest doses and performed survival curves, characterized the extracellular and intracellular manganese-to-iron ratio through ICPMS and did some optical and electro-microscopy studies.
But the thing I think is really interesting is you can deliberately incubate. And when you get done with an incubation period you can deliberately set back to it. So research supports the idea that if you work on a problem for a while, then you incubate, then you return and do something like a brainstorming or an ideation
need for businessmen is always equal to income. So if you have after a certain incubation phase, do you see that the whole Model of 8 of incubating this could be-- sooner or later-- be turned around into loans and funding of businesses.
And our conscious experience, like you're saying, is this kind of train of thoughts in perpetual motion. And that gets a little bit into this idea of creative incubation or what some psychologists would call opportunistic assimilation, where you have that aha moment.
That's the aha moment. And sometimes it really does happen directly out of incubation . So if you think about a story like Newton and the apple, Archimedes in the bathtub, I think there probably was some sort of aha moment.
I'm sure you've thought a bit about that. I really hope that we can have more of an incubation culture in Ghana and on the African

They thought that maybe vapor was released from semen and that somehow stimulated women to make babies while other theories thought that the men actually made the babies and then just transferred them to the females for incubation . I think the men probably overestimated their contribution on that one.
Some of these are organic. Yeah, so the journey of incubation --
So same salad, same concept, but so many variations on it that are really fun to discover. And just check to make sure you're keeping it in that incubation zone.
were actually holding. And so how do we give ourselves not just permission, but also build accountability with peers to do some of that investigation? The whole idea is how do we apply the logic of startup incubation to the guru industry?
the most creative thing, the most important idea, is a new human being. And what is a new human being? It's a combination of two existing human beings. The fifth step--or, I'm sorry, the fourth step is incubation , that's when you bring the subconscious mind into it. And, I think the--you need to--most creative, or all creative thinkers have a very strong relationship to the subconscious mind. And I work hard with myself to try to establish that relationship, and I do three things, and I think about it three ways. It's
For anybody who is not familiar, Fort Knox is a just staggeringly massive music rehearsal and incubation space on the far northwest side of Chicago.
And more and more as we kind of progress into developments in AI and discoverability, incubation , and I really believe that the future of work
I've worked on many. Some of those features-- if you go through YC, or you have one of these other incubation opportunities, those features maybe become products. If that product actually has a life, that product could get funding, potentially.
So same salad, same concept, but so many variations on it that are really fun to discover. They'll actually warm their milk in the crock pot for their yogurt and then not use their yogurt for their incubation -- use the crock pot for their incubation ,
We think about it. My best ideas come to me in the shower or when I'm jogging or when I'm doing something that forces that incubation . But the thing I think is really interesting is you can deliberately incubate.
So the question isn't sit under an apple tree and wait for something to happen. The question is, how can I structure into my workflow these actual periods of incubation ? Now I know what some people are doing.

And a number of organizations and thought leaders have recognized the importance of this, including Pivotal Ventures, which is the Melinda French Gates Incubation
And our conscious experience, like you're saying, is this kind of train of thoughts in perpetual motion. Right? So if I'm busy talking or I'm busy cooking or busy doing other things, I have less left for me both for incubation
This is where you're doing research on the problem. You're gaining expertise. And then most people who have these insights go into a period of incubation . So they actually set it aside.
So a lot of times I get asked, great, but how do I do that? And one of the things that I've started doing is, I use email as a form of incubation . Because most of the emails I get are not important.
male #2: Aircraft carrier. >>Les McKeown: Aircraft carrier. That's it. Okay. Tortured metaphors -- not good. So [clears throat] here's the weird thing. About two to three years into this phase, this incubation phase where we're helping people launch businesses, what do you think might start to happen to some of those businesses? >>Audience Member:
the historical record is an historical record of innovation. Eureka moments are the exception and not the rule. Almost always, there is a very long incubation period that goes into
maybe even in a separate meeting, we would do judgment where we'd bring in some, you know, usually the top, the top managers are usually really good at judgment, at telling you why your idea doesn't work, and telling you why your idea might work. So, you know, the incubation thing, that is, that's a real personal thing, but it also means that, you know what, we have to understand that our ideas are going to take a little bit of time, we need to work on them a little bit, so. Any other questions? Cool. Well, thank you,
