And these periods when the temperature sort of pokes above zero is-- these are interglacials. So the Holocene , which is the entire history of human civilization, is just the latest interglacial. So the whole of human civilization-- all our history, all our wars and hardship and creativity has been in the Holocene .
And as the Anthropocene goes on, one of the things I'm saying is what you're going to be holding is a version of the Holocene . It's not the Holocene anymore, because we're here. And we're going to have impacts.
And we're going to have impacts. So by sustaining the Holocene in perpetuity we take on the role of planetary stewards. And what does that actually mean?
for its own conditions of habitability, then you're in trouble, right? Humanity emerged out of the Holocene , the last 10,000-years interglacial period.
Clearly human beings have been around for longer than that. But it's in the post-Holocene or that-- after the ice-- last ice ages ended-- not post-Holocene but after post-ice age that we started building this kind of civilization. And it's only now that we-- the planet is starting to notice that we're here.
Some of the work that we're doing right now is suggesting that this last period of really rapid increase-- this is the transition from the peak of the last Ice Age into the Holocene warm interval that we're experiencing today-- this last period possibly happened over less than 100 years, or even as quickly as a few decades.
And you see all of the different times and the different kinds of animals. But what's important is we're up here in the Holocene , right? And each of these different Earths represents wildly different conditions that the planet has passed through.
But we have to understand that really what we're trying to do is we're trying to hold some version of the Holocene , right? We are having a great preference for the Holocene , right? I mean we have to understand why we're doing that.
And the emergence of settled life occurs all around the world at about this sort of Holocene period, in the early Holocene . So it's undoubtedly the case that climate has something to do with this shift.
So here we go to what some scientists have defined as the planetary boundaries. Well, we were in the Holocene , a period of exceptional climate stability for 12,000 years. It more or less ended in the 1950s, entering the Anthropocene, the age of where human beings have the major impact on the planet.
Actually what we want-- you can add to this maximum biospheric well-being including polar bears, right? But we have to understand that really what we're trying to do is we're trying to hold some version of the Holocene , right? We are having a great preference for the Holocene , right?
