We can add new inputs that can disrupt those algorithms and that can actually make our awareness a little more exploratory and open so that it's not this definite thing that we think we are reacting to or is true. We have this openness of awareness.
information right they know my face they know that preliminary studies are preliminary they're exploratory it's we're just asking questions you know just throwing things out there seeing if they have any legs and we know it's going to take 10 or 20 years to sort this out and come to a reliable conclusion um so United know that they yeah because that brings up an
interesting of all they are generally not terribly creative if you the more you drive up serotonin the less exploratory Behavior you have they don't tell you that when you take Pro and pxel but the day that's what the data is however they're good with numbers very good with numbers
We want to draw one important distinction at this point, which is the distinction between exploratory analysis and explanatory analysis. So exploratory analysis, you perhaps start off with a question or hypothesis, or you're just digging through your data, trying to understand what's interesting, what can I learn about this data that somebody else might care about?
How do you take this and make it extensible for the rest of the world? This Exploratorium has a long history of working with partners all around the world. And it started out by and large with us reproducing our exhibits that we were so famous for.
Dar so Patrick will introduce the music as you could tell the festival spirit is pretty exploratory it's a bit funky is unlike a regular chamber music concert the whole festival is run in incredible high energy and with lots of fun so I invite you all join me if you call the
about 2 mm thick on all sides required a lot of material and they were cylindrical because that's the only way very exploratory thing to do and if you're setting off on on some type of
Every organization I visited in Latin America, without exception-- I visited more than 100-- without exception and that we helped in some way, even conducting exploratory meetings, as a university, we warned that there was a monumental gap between the organization's needs and its programming abilities.
It's just a simple rest server that's going to call the core stream processing operators that will essentially enable us to run over historical data. So using this exploratory console, it's going to exercise the core cascade functionality that I described earlier. So what does this look like?
and felt there was a need to transform education as we knew it. Before the Exploratorium, if you were to go to a science center, it was largely artifact-based. It was a place that you would see the artifacts of science or the history of science.
So the way we think of science centers right now is a place where you put your hands on experiments and authentic phenomena by and large didn't exist. And the Exploratorium played a critical role in creating what we now know as the informal science center movement. Our original home was at the Palace of Fine Arts.
We're more accessible to a wider variety of communities, including the South Bay and East Bay. What makes the Exploratorium so special and one of the reasons it's had the impact it has is its approach. And I'd actually like to take a moment to talk about some of the core elements of our approach.
But we insisted that it be so in large part to demonstrate the fact that there is no magic. Here is where the Exploratorium and is being created. And those who are creating it have direct access to the floor and our constantly testing out their ideas on our floor.
We're also a cultural center. So the Exploratorium benefits from being in San Francisco immensely. In large part, it is who we are, the fact that we were born here.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. A lot of classical Exploratorium exhibits chosen to be contemplative in a space that you do not want to be incredibly active in, because
But it was that kind of recognition of how those that I had admired most have lived their lives that led me to this kind of exploratory nature. Don't you think you could talk about the Semester at Sea?
And I'll show you what I mean by that in a second. We have an exploratory phase and a confirmatory phase. So how did we do this I will start with the exploratory phase.
and how we make sense of it. It's an exploratory inquiry.
And there were existential rewards of self-discovery and personal growth from journeying into the unknown. The adventurous and exploratory spirit of the modern economic life emerging in the 19th-century cities was reflected also in the arts of the period.
There's no algorithms for doing this, certainly not yet. This is an informal exploratory process for which there are really no rules. But intuition pumps are persuaders to use in those harrowing circumstances.
There was a pattern of play, to passion, to purpose. Parents encouraging much more exploratory, discovery based play. Simple toys. Sand, blocks, clay, water, paint.
walking has been thought of as this exploratory activity.
We believe in authentic phenomena. So the exhibits on the Exploratorium floor, they're not models. They're not simulations. They are the real phenomena.
So we created a professional development program that would accompany the exhibits and designs we created, the experiences we created. And we did trainings both at the Exploratorium and over in Kocaeli Turkey. There were trainings about how you might facilitate the exhibits, how you might scaffold them and do broader learning experiences, and even workshops on the nature of the organization
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. They're wearing some of the Exploratorium vests.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. They had already worked with the Exploratorium in outreach programs and activities for years.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. And then I was at the Exploratorium and I saw a lot of the more classic experiments that were from like the '70s let's say.
And so I'm going to quickly tell you about two experiments that we did to show how trust can be read. The first one is kind of exploratory. We threw out everything that we had known before, and we simply started to try and identify what cues actually predict real monetary trustworthy behavior
We realized we needed to have some exploratory experience up front.
So this was kind of exploratory.
It's the otherside of the exploratory instinct,
Also, thank you to Exploratorium for letting us link into their live stream.
And so this is also going to be an exploratory, iterative process in partnership with you.
because there was no middle ground and sort of exploratory period.
So did you find you were having your ultimate exploratory dating
And I think that it's a fun exploratory exercise that we're going through right now.
And you didn't do a lot of exploratory surgery inside the gut, let alone the chest.
But I encourage all of you to continue what exploratory work you do.
So when I actually run this through the UI, I also get a config file, which can then be used as a seed in a streaming job. So you can basically take the output of the exploratory UI, we can basically get the config. We say, I like that result, please keep it up to date.
Because if anything changed in the data, which it should have if there's something interesting you're trying to say, the pieces are all in an entirely different place Dashboards for me fit-- I talked about this distinction between exploratory and explanatory.
within the nonprofit sector. As the Director of Global Studios at the Exploratorium, Adam is responsible for furthering the museum's mission of transformative education by building partnerships with and then providing creative services to institutions around the world.
As I was preparing for this talk, the first thought I had is this is easy. I have so much to talk about with the Exploratorium. I can't wait to get up there and share.
We were named as one of the most influential nonprofits, one of the 12 most influential non-profits, of the last half century. So there is so much going on at the Exploratorium that puts us in a position to work with the wider world in the way that we do. So starting with a little bit of history, the Exploratorium was founded in 1969
Again, you start with play and interactivity, not the lesson about optics and lenses. Art and science is another fundamental part of the Exploratorium core approach, that we believe that the processes of discovery of art and science are very similar.
And the beauty of natural phenomena and an artistic approach provides a rather profound toe-hold for learners. So this is a picture inside the new Exploratorium. And the last fundamental aspect I would touch on right now is that of accessibility and the power of creative engines
This is our central gallery. It's probably the most similar to the old Exploratorium, where you'll find classic exhibits on light, optics, perception, listening. And if you look, it's actually a rather understated building.
both here and in Turkey. And you can see here these are some of the classic Exploratorium activities. This is the cow eye dissection.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. And the connections that were made between us at the Exploratorium and our counterparts in Saudi Arabia continue to this day.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. So you could say that x% of the Exploratorium wasn't even created here.
agency, all of these things, we felt have their own merit and are important. And I would start by saying that even within the Exploratorium, when there was first dialogue about approaching sociology as a content set in Science and Sharing, there
