Earlier this year Timelapse won the People's Choice Webby for best use of moving images and video on the web.As a senior system scientist at CMU's Create Lab, Randy researches for the Explorables Project, developing ways to interactively explore and understandlarge data sets and complex systems, including air and water quality and employment in economic trends.

My name is Randy Sargent.And I am at Carnegie Mellon University, where I work on making large sets of time series imagery and data explorable and understandable.My name's Rebecca Moore.

we could start to produce derivative products.We'd been tracking what Randy's-- his project called Time Machine, which is this zoomable, panable, explorable,time-varying imagery. And he had done one interesting thing that related to a certain satellite imagery data set, called MODIS.

What are the trends?The sort of information that comes from that, we need to also make that interesting, useful, explorable, usable by people in the policy community,usable by the general public.

He's currently holding dual appointments on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and also here at Google.As a visiting scientist with my Google Earth Engine team, Randy's helping to research and develop time-lapse explorable maps, including a recently released time-lapse animationof the entire earth from 1984 to 2012, which was mosaiced for more than two million Landsat satellite images.
