Do you know that for high school, for high school slots, last year there were about 13,000 applications for 3,000 slots? So that means the 10,000 who didn't get in to a selective enrollment high school in Chicago ended up in the regular school or going to a private school. And so that is the challenge.Now some have said, "Well the only way you're gonna get away from that and the only way you're gonna really deal with this is by continuing to create charter schools." We're not going
And if you just sign up people and tell them they have to fill out a form if they don't want to join, enrollments go to 90% almost everywhere.The UK has done this at the national level, and less than 10% opt out.
And then we also think about the children going to that school. The enrollment has increased by more than 250%.
There's something estimated like two million DACA-eligible people in our Asian-Pacific Islander community. The enrollment has been a lot lower than in other communities, but I really felt that WHIAAPI and the commissioners played an important role in doing outreach and really trying to understand what were the barriers and challenges in our community, but also how to make sure that our communities knew
But it's the people who pay to play the oboe who probably have a better musical experience over time because of agency, because of enrollment , because they're not just doing their job. And so when we think about work, where we need to get paid, because we're a professional and we have to with bills and stuff,

put my child in the school across the street or down the block from where I live in or do I find a school across town, a private school or another public school that's selective, with selective enrollment ?" Today's there an article in the Tribune today about the gifted and classical programs and the number of families that do all kinds of things to prepare their little ones to take that test because people are worried.
Where do we-- you talk a lot about agency. You talk a lot about enrollment . Where do we have agency ?
Yeah, yeah, it's amazing. But there's nothing simple like automatic enrollment .
At the same time, when we think of disaggregated data-- and I'll thank you, Tung, for your compliment. When it came time to do enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, we knew that, in our community, because we're one third limited English proficient, we were trying to figure out, well, how are we going to best enroll people?

I have a lot to say, so I want to try to make it quick. So for number one, Affordable Care Act and enrollment of Asian-Americans, both in terms of getting the act passed and in terms of engaging. What does that do, as school enrollment rates increase dramatically-- sometimes we've seen double, triple, quadruple or more-- literacy rates increase.
Another possibility, and again these are all enrollment numbers, rough enrollment numbers.
And there have been three big innovations that have made those a lot better. The first was changing the default to join, what's now called automatic enrollment . Lots of people just didn't get around to joining, even in companies that were matching contributions.
