And so he wanted to make up a name for Black English that didn't sound like "Negro English," which is what it was called.Ebony was a hot term at the time.It didn't sound as dated as it does now.

And I mean, I was only a small kid myself, but I can just smell.Ebonics must have felt really cool at the time.That felt modern. It felt like people with big afros.

And then we'd have a lot of leeway in terms of skin color at least in that conversation-- Pacific Islander, Native American as well.Ebonics is an antiquated term.

And so you just have to accept it.So Ebonics. But it's chance that you and I are calling it that.And so what is your definition of Black English and it's distinction from slang?

And honestly, that is the first black-owned company that I worked for.And "Ebony" is an interesting story, because this is a 70-plus-year-old company.And the reason it was started is because, even back then, of course, there was a dearth of positive news, or affirming news, or even just factual news

So I grew up knowing that Black images were important.We had "Ebony." Ebony Fashion Fair would come through once a year.So I learned-- I loved Ebony Fashion Fair.

Can you take us back, and give, for those who are not aware, more information about the proposal, and how you kind of rose as the thought leaderon Black English or Ebonics?No. I'm not the thought leader on it.

It was scary. He had a major influence on a lot of schoolteachers.He picked up that Ebonics term.He had given it to the Oakland people.

So just to give you a little bit more detail about me.I did work at "Ebony" magazine, where I was the editor-in-chief and also the senior vice president of digital editorial.And honestly, that is the first black-owned company that I worked for.

So what I wanna share now is, uh, some of the questions that I asked these people.I had Ebonics when I showed up.

We had "Ebony." Ebony Fashion Fair would come through once a year.So I learned-- I loved Ebony Fashion Fair.I did too. I miss-- there's nothing that has taken the place of that.

But that is how it started, because that's when people got the idea that I was, quote, unquote, "interesting." So that's what happened.So where did the term Ebonics actually come from?It was something somebody made up in good faith in about 1973.

That's what Black English is.And is Black English different from Ebonics?No. Ebonics refers to the exact same thing.

Yeah. Well, it is interesting.I think it might be "Ebony" now.

Has a very glassy sound, you guys can tap it.And right here we have ebony.This wood is not colored or dyed in any way, this is the natural color of the wood.

This is just allowing this wood to not create too much of a vacuum.There was a piece of ebony, it's on the floor there.

"Five G. Ahh!!!" But my sister's always been very honest with me and I said to her, "I don't know if I canbefore Essence specifically and-and Ebony and all-all of the African-American publications, but no one really talks to him about this.

Right. And we saw the European fashions and learned how to say Yves Saint Laurent and Dior.And I can remember the woman who was the voice of Ebony Fashion Fair.She's actually a good friend, still lives in New York.

Marisa was recognized in "The Chronicle of Philanthropy's" 40 Under 40.And she was named a member of the "EBONY" Power 100, amongst other community crusaders that she greatly admires.In 2018, she was a contributing author to the book, "Modern Loss," a series of candid stories and illustrations on grief.

So that's kind of how it started.And then I would read "Essence." I would read "Ebony" after my mom put it down.And I would love to see women who looked like me being active participants in fashion.

Now, the media just jumped on this and completely misunderstood what was meant by dialect, what was meant by using it in the classroom.And so the big joke was that basically Ebonics, which is a name for Black English no one had heard of until then,except for a few education scholars in about 1973, that this Ebonics was going to be taught in class as opposed to standard English.

And so they were using it.And that's the only reason that we now say Ebonics.For about 10 years, I said, I'm not using that term.

And is Black English different from Ebonics?No. Ebonics refers to the exact same thing.Got it. And so let's not use that word.

Black English. Let's call it Black English.No, Ebonics is stuck in.And so yeah, Ebonics.

Bombarded 24/7 in print and in television with the whiteHollywood standard of beauty and success, Ebony magazine sought to celebrate the achievement of blacks in America and the black experience in general.Martin Luther King Jr. gave black people a sense of purpose that they were somebody.
