And then, somewhere else, we were mining Twitter for-- we ended up taking about a million tweets-- and training those tweets according to directorial intention. So literally, the class went through and had a page of 15 intentions like, to persuade, or to confront, or to calm. And we classified each of those tweets and used that as a training set for a machine learning algorithm that selected tweets in real time
You're versatile. How do these elements play off of each other? How does your directorial sensibility affect your writing and acting? Can you share some insights?
Thanks, Kevin. Thank you, everybody. So you have your directorial debut of your new film short film, "Ellis." Can you talk to us about what the film is about? Yes. It's a short film about this quite amazing place on Ellis Island where 12 million immigrants came through to America on the east coast.
because sometimes it does feel like this kind of little empathy exercise all the time. You also recently made your directorial debut with "There's Something in the Water." Congratulations. What was it like being on the other side of the camera?
I wanted to start with you, Olivia. I know that this is your directorial debut. This is a first film that you have been sitting in the director's seat.
So they tell me. You have these sort of directorial geniuses who do not have the musical vocabulary to help to guide you.
That's true. We met 15 years ago on a production of "The Boyfriend" that Julie Andrews-- it was her directorial debut out at Bay Street Theater out on Long Island. And I was an intern then.
He was an actor to begin with, and he's an amazing actor and an amazing singer. And who knew that he had this directorial genius in him as well? He did a show on Broadway a few seasons ago called "Spring Awakening." It was a revival.
You're going to love it. But then also taking on the directorial role, co-writing-- credited as co-writer, but really rewriting the screenplay to get it to take place. How was it for you to broach the genre?
And some folks ended up entirely changing roles, and backgrounds, and personalities in this process. It's like you get a different directorial voice in each episode.
You're taking on writing and directing. Was it harder to be doing both in your directorial debut, or was it a little easier? I found it easier just because I was somewhat loose with the script, and that made it so I didn't have to kind of consult with anyone.
Claire: Mmm hmm. Cool, very cool. So next we're going to move on to your directorial , feature directorial debut, Pieces of April. So let's roll that clip.
But I think it is like being everybody else. I guess, related to that-- your directorial sensibility, how does it work with different director styles? Like, K.B. is very different from, say, Mani Ratnam from .
And so even when we were making no money, even when it was a couple hundred bucks a week to be a part of the development-- at the Public King on this "One Night in Miami" movie, Regina King's directorial debut on a film after she'd won the Oscar-- this is the next thing that she did.
First right here to my right, we have Mimi Leder. She's the director. Has had a long, successful directorial career spanning decades with numerous TV shows, which I think you've heard of, "The Leftovers," "Vanish," "John Doe," "ER" among them.
So I just gave them names. And so "Ex Machina", which you worked on before-- this was your first directorial debut-- what did you take away or learn from that film as a director that you brought over to this film?
In 2010, he won the Someone to Watch award at the Independent Spirit Awards for his directorial debut, "Easier with Practice." "The Stanford Prison Experiment"
And then we sent them out into the world to enact these scenes. And this was with somebody off camera, selecting a directorial intent for the scene in real time, and having that directorial intent, in turn, select a tweet that went to the actors.
This is a quick picture-- none of these things are highly designed behind the scenes in terms of what they look like. But this was the control page that was used off camera to select which of the sentiments-- the directorial intents-- were used to select a tweet that was driven to the actors.
