I was like, literally-- my mom had to come grab me out. "Space Cadet " premieres globally on Prime Video on July 4, so everyone can watch it on Prime.
And the best thing I could think of doing was going to sea. So I was a cadet officer in a nautical college, King Edwards. After a year, I went there to do three and a half years at sea with British-India Steam Navigation Company.

And there they are, goofing around. They have several events that the cadets are allowed to cut loose and the gentlemen on both sides are wearing one of the standard cadet uniforms. But this guy in the middle, he's been left out and he's completely shoeless.

He's only 12, 13 years old when this is going on. There are two other officer cadets in the unit that are young like him. They both are killed.

And you wind up with a lot of pain and suffering instead of the promised joy. And I learned about this kind of thing as a cadet at West Point. Here I am at Beast Barracks.
Another thing I learned at West Point, from another famous graduate, General Eisenhower. I slept in his room when I was a cadet . He had a gold plaque, on the mantlepiece, saying General Dwight D. Eisenhower slept here.
It was Company L2. There were 24 companies in the Corp of Cadets . And one of the primary responsibilities, of a training officer, was to get the cadets to march really well in the Formal Parades.
And about that time, one of our most famous graduates died, General Douglas MacArthur. He was very close to the Corp of Cadets during the last years of his life. His last speech is memorized, to this day, by every cadet .
His casket would be pulled by a riderless horse to his grave. And marching behind that casket would be a company of cadets . And so Company L2, being the number one marching company in the Corp, was selected to bury General MacArthur.
comprised of freshman sophomore juniors and seniors and that is pretty much where the leadership hierarchy mirrors the army so that's where a lot of West Point Cadets get their leadership training is through leading each other um I know that bill did extensive research on this book and you know as I mentioned before he did over 600
It was all the staff, all the cadets . And they said, we accidentally let a Black cadet in. We are to silence him and treat him as if he's invisible until he drops out.
Standing next to me is Four-Star General Barry McCaffrey. So I learned how to deal with really difficult situations as a West Point cadet . My last year there, I was, actually, got the job as training officer for my company.
Right. Because it's just too damn much to show you all of New York in one day, right? I'm remembering "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet ." when you had to imagine most of what you were supposed to be seeing.
And it's an all-hands meeting. It was all the staff, all the cadets . And they said, we accidentally let a Black cadet in.
And I don't remember running, but I do remember seeing a plane north of the White House over 16th Street, and thinking But I was going to give a speech to a group of cadets at a military school.
It's a very tough time, you get yelled at, you get your head shaved, you get woken up at 5:30 in the morning, you go on long runs. And West Point had lost between 5 and 10 percent of its first year cadets Jonah Lehrer: right off the bat. In the first 6 weeks.
I've seen water balloons flying into port-o-pots and knocking them over. And more recently, we recently had two cadets make the news for being stranded on a mountain, rappelling. But they're all over the place there, they're quite amazing.
What do we do specifically at West Point? Well, we're there for the cadets and the academy and to meet their needs first, and then we serve the surrounding area. And it's almost a 300 mile radius, but if the right mission comes in, we'll go even further than that.

So those are the kinds of questions she asked. And what she discovered in 2005 is that her short Grit O Survey, given to every cadet at West Point on the second day at West Point, was the first survey that allowed them to predict retention. They've used it every year since and it works every single year.

The last parade of the year, the Graduation Parade, my future father-in-law was there. And after the parade, he said, "Jeff, who was that last company in the Corp of Cadets ? They seemed to float across the field.
There's no spare time. And I remember leaving class that day, and there was something off about kind of the movements of the cadets . And then I found myself back to my barracks room, where I was going to hit the rack.
And we do football games and we do these official reviews. And what a review is, is like the head, the CEO, or in our case it's a Superintendent, a Lieutenant General, a three-star General stands in front of the cadets and in front of the band and he inspects us.
