How to pronounce “blue ice” in English

There was no internet.It's a suncup blue ice runway.

But I went to Antarctica to photograph -- to photograph all the beautiful animals, the penguins, you know, the seals, all this stuff, but I fell in love -- I fellin love with the blue ice.The blue ice down there is incredible.

Our first piece of business to do is to actually unload the aircraft.So we literally start going across this barren wasteland of blue ice and snow, and we do have to worry about crevices as we're going out.

You're really setting the lens up for what's called the hyperfocal point.But I fell in love with this beautiful blue ice.Just look at these formations.

We couldn't leave for two full weeks from Punta Arenas because over the Transantarctic Mountains there was a shadow, and the pilot needs to leave early in the morningto be able to avoid the shadow that this mountain range casts on the blue ice runway.Two weeks we waited.

And they land this monster aircraft right on the ice.That's the tarmac. It's just solid blue ice.I mean, it's pretty incredible.

There was no internet.Finally after two weeks, we land there on a blue ice runway.

And so it's only begun, man.So if you noticed in these photos here, there's a lot of blue ice.And that basically is evidence of the katabatic winds.

Without mystery, there's no adventure.And we planned to ski around this mountain range, but we couldn't even do that, because it all just ended up being that blue ice.Even with full skins on the bottom of your skis for traction, for backcountry use, even on the flats, we couldn't do that.
