Most of the science in it I researched for a book I wrote in 2005 called More Than Human about the actual science of augmenting our minds and bodies. Now of course, we've seen this idea of getting data in and out of the brain in science fiction for a long time.
For early modern men and women, you eat your food, it sits in the stomach, gets converted into blood, blood circulates around the body, ends up in the testicles, Because if you're augmenting the testicles, you're augmenting the thing that produces seed, and seed is fundamental for conception.
As far as the work that we're planning, right now when we run our anomaly detection algorithms, We are looking at augmenting MKAD with active learning methods that can be used to provide this kind of feedback.
push the performance. This is one of the questions I wanted to ask. How much do you focus on augmenting the performance with, whether it's a bicycle or a wheel? I've seen all kinds of things.
Do you see that as something that's actually going to develop in the near future, maybe with diagnostic applications replacing doctors? Or do you see technology more as augmenting the power of doctors? LLOYD B. MINOR: I think it initially will be augmenting the power of doctors.
And interesting that you've chosen Wharton 22's group. And how did you think about perhaps augmenting or being a joint force with Wharton Women in Business group? So then that's inclusive, it's a joint force.
there were not many Slavic language speakers in the military at the time. So we were like bringing in people who were augmenting us from all the other services and having to join our unit and get organized to help in our intelligence mission.
humans tend to be complements for the automated power systems. It's not so clear that automating cognitive tasks and augmenting cognitive tasks is going to be complementary, versus a substitute, for human labor. And as we work through the implications of the second machine age, we need to think about how we can make the kinds of adjustments
strangers all the time uh right now I'm kind of showing a lot of sort of landscaping type stuff but I probably any dangers or you see any danger in augmenting um that Human Experience um and making it I don't know almost see
It's like what nature did is just discover these neural processes that allow us to build models of the world and then just repackage them And very recently, we've shown that by augmenting the neurons we use in deep learning, we can make them sort of closer to biological neurons
You don't get platypus keytar until you're doing some serious both, anding, so that's the opportunity. And really, what we're talking about is augmenting human experience with data and context. So the broader opportunity, in a technology sense, is to really think about, where are you meeting someone in the world?
faster horses. It's sometimes difficult for us to conceive, in politics, of systems that are so radically different from our own. And instead, we just think of technologies as augmenting or supercharging what we already have. And so the changes that I've just described to democracy are all profound.
And we're also looking at machine learning and multimodal foundational models and large language models-- in other words, the introduction of language-- as a way of augmenting perception and delivering more intelligence, more capabilities to think abstractly for our machines.
Next slide. Next. OK, now, let's get a little bit cerebral here, all right. This is not the first time we've had disruptive technologies that could provoke a crisis of progress by augmenting human vision, augmenting human memory and human attention. Each time the new surfeit of information seems overwhelming and unmanageable,
the onset of delirium. So with the project DREAMS-- which is acronym, it stands for Digital Rehabilitation Environment Augmenting System-- we're looking to introduce mindfulness and meditation, ultimately, as a therapy for accepting the reality as is
Or do you see technology more as augmenting the power of doctors? LLOYD B. MINOR: I think it initially will be augmenting the power of doctors. And already an interpretation of radiology, imaging studies, we're seeing the tremendous power of augmenting the diagnosis and of using machine
And that seems to me to be a key point to remember when you think about how are we augmenting workers.
And so they actually created this writing system for themselves after the point in time where they started augmenting themselves.
And then we would introduce those genes and enzymes into human cells, thereby augmenting the capacity of those cells to break things down.
Sergey Brin has said that ultimately Google is about making, augmenting your brain with
computers are invisible, behind the scene, helping us, supporting us, and augmenting our everyday activities.
And I think you also talked about one story where somebody had lost a sense, and by augmenting it, you found that they hadn't lost the sense completely.
LLOYD B. MINOR: I think it initially will be augmenting the power of doctors. And already an interpretation of radiology, imaging studies, we're seeing the tremendous power of augmenting the diagnosis and of using machine learning initially on an imaging study to give a reading, and then having that confirmed or not by radiologists.
Mamie: So I know when you wrote Tools for Thought, you were inspired by Doug Engelbart's 1962 Augmenting Human Intellect.
